Dr. Alex Hiscox
Director of Social Impact
Alex is Director of Social Impact at Arctech Innovation.
Alex obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences (2.i) from the University of Oxford in 2005, where she conducted her BSc research project with Oxitec, working on studies evaluating the fitness of transgenic Mediterranean fruit flies. She went on to pursue her passion for the development of new tools for vector control at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, undertaking an MSc (Distinction) in the Biology and Control of Disease Vectors (2007) and a PhD in Medical Entomology (2012), with support of the Institut Pasteur du Laos.
Alex has a strong background in field and semi-field trials, and has worked in China, the Lao PDR, Vietnam, Kenya, Tanzania and Malawi. Between 2012 and 2015 she worked as a post-doctoral research scientist at Wageningen University and Research, the Netherlands, where she led the first ever evaluation of mass-mosquito trapping for malaria control; a large-scale intervention study based on Rusinga Island, Kenya. Between 2015 and 2019 she continued to work in East Africa, leading semi-field and field studies to evaluate new spatial repellents and traps for mosquito control.
Since joining Arctech Innovation in 2019, Alex has brought in her experience of managing semi-field and field trials, expanding our out-of-house testing portfolio. Alex works with a range of clients and embraces the opportunity to develop both new and existing methodologies for product evaluation, with services tailored to meet individual client needs.
