From routine testing to strategic innovation, how Arctech’s long-term, trust-based client relationships are unlocking novel products and improved commercial outcomes.
As Europe’s leading mosquito repellent manufacturer, Perrigo has long understood the importance of rigorous regulatory compliance. In 2022, as revised Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) guidelines triggered the reauthorisation of its flagship Jungle Formula range, the company turned to Arctech Innovation, a department of dot, to oversee and deliver the efficacy testing.
What began as a routine CRO engagement however has since evolved into something far more interesting as Sarah Dewhirst, Senior Director of Scientific Delivery at Arctech explains: “Perrigo approached us to navigate the BPR reauthorisation process and adhere to efficacy guidelines, looking for a service many manufacturers seek – robust and reliable testing. We managed a multi-year programme of testing to develop claims across a portfolio of several products, with many insect species, and supported with the BPR process.”

“In 2022, it was very much about renewing our efficacy claims for Perrigo, making sure everything was submitted correctly under BPR, and that the data met the highest standards. Over three years, Arctech consistently delivered timely, robust data, with clear communication and deep regulatory knowledge - everything you’d expect of a quality CRO. But they didn’t just validate our claims, they helped us to enhance them. The partnership ultimately enabled our marketing team to add improved, market-leading claims to Jungle Formula labels – which exceeded our expectations”

Manufacturers are increasingly realising Arctech do more than just testing. dot – Arctech’s parent company - are innovation leaders in using scent to detect and manipulate pest behaviour, and that enquiring mindset underpins the ethos at Arctech too.
“We generate test data, but we always interrogate it”, Sarah continued, “What does a result mean? Where could it go next? How can a client innovate further? We then pass that insight on”
By 2025, this approach had begun to unlock new opportunities with Perrigo.
“Working with Arctech shifted our perception from working with a standard CRO to considering them as an innovation partner,” Cécile from Perrigo added. “The regular updates, collaborative problem-solving and open communication really built our confidence. As a client, being kept informed and involved is crucial and their input was especially valued."
“Unexpected effects aren’t always reported as part of routine testing," reflected Chris Rixson, Business Development Director at Arctech, “But it’s these are the kinds of details that can lead to new products. And that’s where our innovation expertise kicks in. A company might not be looking at certain insect behaviour, but if a trial shows it - it’s important we let them to know - because who knows where it could lead?”

Cécile from Perrigo continued: “Following reauthorisation, we saw an opportunity to build on the relationship. So, we approached Arctech to discuss potential new product concepts and new market opportunities for Jungle Formula."
"Their impressive research base and reputation for taking their own products to market, gave us confidence to explore a broader collaboration in product innovation.”
That partnership is now working on the early-stages of ‘next-generation’ solutions.
“Perrigo is an exciting client relationship which reflects a broader shift we are seeing in the industry," added Sarah. “While regulatory testing remains our ‘bread and butter’, companies are increasingly seeking collaborators who can go the extra mile and think innovatively."

“Clients are coming to us with challenges – things that don’t quite work yet, or trials with unexpected results – and given our specialisms which cover human, animal and plant health - we can support them extremely well.”
Cécile from Perrigo summed it up: “I think manufacturers are increasingly looking for partners who can do more than just validate finished products. They want expertise, guidance and innovative thinking.”
“For manufacturers who are navigating the complex regulatory landscapes, Arctech is definitely a CRO with a difference,” added Chris. “Compliance may be the starting point – but partnerships offer better products, stronger claims, and a long-term competitive advantage.”
“And as the Perrigo journey demonstrates, when scientific rigour meets collaborative thinking, the result can be much more than ‘approval’ – it can be real progress and impact.”
